After going without food for three days the young man looked gaunt and ill. Gaunt means very thin or emaciated, sunken in appearance, bony, haggard, how you would expect someone to look after not eating for a significant period of time. Jovial means happy, healthy and well, whereas cumbersome means heavy and slow, bulky.
