in the swimming contest the narrator's mother is Jewish widow in Israel. the story situates the character in Israeli Arab conflict and a gamut of patriarchal norms of the two societies are juxtaposed from her position as a widow. she faces challenges in her home among orthodox Jews as well as Arab  Muslims.
