Answered

Mr. Sanchez’s class sold fruit pies for $1.32 each and Mr. Kelly’s class sold bottles of fruit juice for $1.77 each. Together, the classes sold 90 items and earned $140.40 for their school.
(a) Write and solve a system of equations that model the problem. Show all your work.
(b) Which class earned more money?
(c) How much more money did that class earn?

Answer :

A) Equations are x + y = 90, 1.32x + 1.77y = 140.40, where x is number of fruit pies sold and y is the number of fruit juices sold. x= $1.32, y = $1.77.

B) Mr. Kelly's class earned more money.

C) Mr. Kelly's class made $29.52 more.

Step-by-step explanation:

Step 1; Assume x is the amount of fruit pies sold and y is the amount of fruit juices sold. It is given that both the classes sold 90 items in total. so

x + y = 90, take this as equation 1.

It is also given they both earned $140.40 out of which fruit pies sold for $1.32 each and fruit juice sold for $1.77 each. So,

1.32x + 1.77y = 140.40, take this as equation 2.

Step 2; Now we solve these equations.

Equation 1 can also be, y = 90 - x, take this as equation 3.

Substitute equation 3 in 2,

1.32x + 1.77(90 - x) = 140.40,

1.32x + 159.3 - 1.77x = 140.44

Taking the known values to the right and keeping the unknown x values on the left, we get

1.32x -1.77x = 140.44 - 159.3

-0.45x = -18.9

Since both sides are negative,

0.45x = 18.9, x = 42

Substitute this is equation 1,

x + y = 90, y = 90 - x, y = 90 - 42 = 48.

So Mr. Sanchez’s class sold 42 fruit pies for $1.32 each and Mr. Kelly’s class sold 48 bottles of fruit juice for $1.77 each.

Money made

Mr. Sanchez's class ; 42 × $1.32 = $55.44

Mr. Kelly's class ; 48 × $1.77 = $84.96.

The difference made was $84.96 - $55.44 = $29.52
