it’ll take the caterpillar 6 hours

The time taken by the caterpillar will be 5 hours and 20 minutes.

What is speed?

Speed is defined as the ratio of the time distance travelled by the body to the time taken by the body to cover the distance.

Given that:-

  • A caterpillar is trapped in a glass that is 12 inches tall.
  • The caterpillar can climb 3 inches per hour
  • But then it rests for an hour during which time it slips back 1 inch.

The time is taken will be calculated as:-

Speed = distance / time

time = distance / speed

time = 12 / 3 = 4 hours

Rest time = 1 hour

Time due to 1 inch slip = distnace / speed = 1 / 3 =0.333

Total time = 4  +  1  + 0.33 = 5.33 hours = 5 hours 30 minutes

Therefore the time taken by the caterpillar will be 5 hours and 20 minutes.
