The GPS (Global positioning system) is used to find out the position of an object through the help of satellites ( approximately there are 24 satellites working for this system) orbiting around the earth. These satellites broadcast their messages and it's up to the receiver to combine these broadcasts in order to find it's position. This process is known as triangulation.
