Imagine your city builds a new high school. Half the students at your current high school will have to attend the new one next year. You are one of them. The school board calls a meeting to name the new school and select a mascot for its extracurricular programs. One meeting turns into several as emotions run high. Everyone has a different opinion on the name and mascot for the school. Some people favor naming it after a historical figure. Yet no one can agree on which one. Others think it should reflect local culture. People have suggested animals ranging from ants to yaks for the mascot.

First, the new principal should consider the naming of the school will reflect on the identity of the school which will impact and shape the civic values of those who attend. Secondly, the new principal should consider the make-up of the population that will attend along with the importance of preserving heritage and traditions along with creating new ones.

Two challenges that may be faced are selecting a name that will appease to the majority of the population and collecting and interpreting the ideas of the public to come to the conclusion of a name. Whatever name officials decide upon, I hope it helps foster a sense of community for the new schools and also sets a high bar for the educational standards we will want to see in place.

Mascots are popular and important symbols for schools because people focus on this particular symbol for good luck and guidance. It is important to the students because the mascot will be integrated into all major events such as sports, band and all school memorabilia such as year books and shirts.
