It's worthy to note that Britiain and the U.S. made claims to the Oregon territory but in order to avoid war the then president, James Polk agreed to take the boundary at the 49th parallel. When Mexico had no ability to continue in the war with the U.S., Mexico accepted the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo prompting the creation of a huge amount of land. It was named the land Mexican Cession.
