For example 12x+5y=19 is a linear equation.

We have,

- 4x + y = 8     .....(i)

x - 5y = 17     .....(ii)

Now,

Rewrite equation (ii) ,

x - 5y = 17  

⇒ x = 5y + 17     .....(iii)

Now substitue  this value of x in equation (i) i.e. - 4x + y = 8

We get,

- 4(5y + 17) + y = 8

- 20y - 68 + y = 8

- 19y - 68 = 8

- 19y = 8 + 68

-19y = 76

⇒ y = - 4

So, we have a value of y now substitute this equation (iii),

We get,

x = 5(-4) + 17

x = - 20 + 17

x = - 3

So,

The solution to the given linear equations is ( -3, -4 ).
