Tone: by paying attention to the whole statement, the tone of the sentence and how it "feels" inside of a larger context might help you understand the word.
Pictures or Examples: The text itself might contain some example of the word cited that leads to the understanding of it. In some cases, it even has a picture or an illustration that shows it.
Affix and Root words: By paying attention to prefixes like (mis-, in-, dis-), and suffixes like (-men, -ble, -ful, -ly, -less), you can actually clarify the meaning of the word, considering that you know the word without the prefixes and suffixes.
Definition: sometimes a text might explain the word right after using it or long before. It doesn't always happen but it might be there.
Grammar: If you can tell the grammatical use of the word (as if it is a pronoun, adjective, adverb, and so on), it might be really helpful to understand its meaning on a larger context.
